Squeezed in-between the Hidaka and Daisetsuzan mountain ranges, this was once an Ainu stronghold. The modern city of Obihiro (帯広) was founded in 1883 by the Banseisha, a group of colonial settlers from Shizuoka Prefecture in Central Honshū. For travellers, it's an access point for Daisetsuzan National Park and a place to break up a long, cross-island journey. In 2018, it was shaken by a major earthquake with an epicenter nearby.
