Every year, many visitors to Japan purchase a JR Pass without researching it properly, and end up wasting a large amount of money. Every week, visitors to the Thorntree post questions about the JR Pass, many of which have been answered on here before.

If you are thinking about purchasing a JR Pass for your trip to Japan, please read through this FAQ before buying it or posting a question on the Thorntree:

What is the JR Pass?
What is JR?
What type of tourist is it aimed for?
What type of tourist

Hi. I am in Osaka (April 20th) and was going to put a general message out to see if anybody is interested in meeting up and going to explore the Chuo and Kita area for a food tour tonight.

I have no set plans on where to go but those two areas seem to have the largest concentration of great restaurants besides Dotonbori (which is just going to be insane on a Friday night).

Some small info about me, I’m 29 (m)and from Toronto, Canada. And I’m really just looking for some great food.

Cheers,
Yon…

I'm new to this forum and have a rare opportunity to spend 24 hours in Japan this weekend. I was thinking of filming parts of the trip and was wondering if there was anything specific that people might want to see posted as as a video. Any spots, activities, restaurants or bars you want to see live? Let me know!

I think most tourists who visit Hiroshima fly into Osaka or Tokyo and visit Hiroshima by train. I wanted to drop this info here in case anyone googles about arriving in Hiroshima airport. I flew in from Hong Kong this week.

The Hiroshima airport is located a good 40km from the city center, and given the expense of taxis in Japan, most tourists are probably going to want to take one of the airport limousine buses into the city center. There is a bus that goes to the train station and one that…

Hey all :-)

I'm probably traveling to the US this year for studying PhD (with F-type students visa). I'm Egyptian. I'm asking if it would be possible to do visa requirements to travel for permanent (not just exchange student) study in Japan while I'm in the US - or is it only possible for me, as an Egyptian, to do the visa requirements while I'm in Egypt?

Hi everyone,

Firstly thanks in advance to everyone who replies on this forum. It’s wonderful to see strangers across the world be so generous with one another.

My family and I (two adults, kids aged 10 and 12) are visiting for two weeks at the end of September, flying in and out of Osaka. We are tossing up between spending our time around Kyoto, Nara, Koyosan and possibly Kanasawa or Takayama OR shooting across (train?) to Kyushu and visiting Nagasaki, Mt Aso, Yakushima and an onsen somewhere…

Hello,
We would appreciate any feedback on the below winter itinerary. We reduced the time in Nozawa Onsen (from 4 to 3 nights) and head to Tokyo on Jan. 11. Just checking if it is worth cutting a day off Nozawa Onsen so we can combine Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass (from Jan. 3 to Jan. 5) and the 7 day JR Pass (from Jan. 5 to Jan. 11) or alternatively just Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass alone. Apparently the 14 day Rail pass would not pay off??

  • Dec 29 - Jan 2 (5 nights) - KYOTO
  • Jan 3-4 -…
