Worth a Trip: Amakusa Islands

The Amakusa Islands are part of the Unzen-Amakusa National Park, a region that includes two secluded peninsulas – one in Kumamoto (Amakusa) and one in Nagasaki (the Shimabara peninsula). This lovely region has all the riches one would expect from a quiet fishing area: great seafood, rustic inns and friendly locals. On one of the more remote islands, a number of dinosaur bones have been found. There are also lovely onsen and, as one would expect on an island facing west, some of the best sunsets in all of Kyūshū.

Misumi is the nearest train station. Renting a car is the ideal way to see the area, but there are also buses from the ferry ports.
