Welcome to Northern Kansai
The northern reaches of Kansai are dramatically different from the densely populated urban areas to the south. Quiet hamlets like Miyama are found in the mountains north of Kyoto, and beyond lies a spectacular coastline with sandy beaches, rugged headlands and rocky islets (all part of the San-in Kaigan Geopark). Though the region is largely rural, there are some popular holiday destinations here, such as the hot-spring resort town of Kinosaki Onsen. Off-the-beaten-track spots include the Tango Peninsula.
