The arrival of the Hokuriku shinkansen (bullet train) in 2015 marked the beginning of a new period of prosperity for Kanazawa, slashing journey times from Tokyo by more than an hour. The direct trip between Kanazawa and Tokyo (¥14,120) now takes just 2½ hours.

The JR Hokuriku line links Kanazawa with Fukui (tokkyū/futsū ¥2500/1320, 45 minutes/1½ hours), Kyoto (tokkyū ¥6380, 2¼ hours), Osaka (tokkyū ¥7130, 2¾ hours) and Toyama (futsū ¥980, one hour).
