The best noodles in town are found in this 250-year-old Edo-era wooden schoolhouse. The house speciality is buke-soba served with takenoko (bamboo) and tempura-fried ōba (large perilla leaf). Little has changed here in years, including the regular clientele and the travellers who seek it out.

It's in the middle of the buke yashiki (samurai district); look for the wooden sign above the entrance. There's a pleasant gift shop out the back.
