Nanryū Sansō

Lodge in Hakusan National Park

One of two accommodation centres on the peaks, it's a 3½-hour hike from Bettōdeai to this basic mountain lodge, which is usually packed at the height of the mid-summer hiking season, when you'll get about one tatami mat's worth of sleeping space in the main hall. Otherwise, bare-bones camping and cabins are available. Vistas are stunning and reservations essential.
