Welcome to Central Kyūshū
This beautiful region, firmly placed on the tourist map for its towering mountains, active volcanoes, grassland plateaus, river-cut chasms and coasts fringed with coral reefs, also boasts historic towns and world-class sightseeing. It is perhaps best known, however, for the city of Nagasaki, on which the United States dropped the second atomic bomb.
In 2016 the Kumamoto region experienced several severe earthquakes that killed many people and destroyed thousands of homes. In October that same year, Aso-san (Mt Aso) erupted, further damaging the area. At the time of writing, some sites and roads were still closed pending repair.
