Some of Japan's finest onsen ryokan (traditional hot-spring inns) are found in the hollows of this densely forested alpine region, or along the banks of its many rivers. In cities, modern, practical hotels offer midrange comforts. A newish development throughout the region is more guesthouses, which often offer the best value. A mix of all three will keep things interesting, but be sure to have at least one ryokan splurge!
