Amid lush, old-growth forests on Chiba's Bōsō Peninsula (Bōsō-hanto), Gankoyama is a rustic hamlet of simple log houses built on platforms amid soaring cedars. You can sign up for day and overnight courses to practice yoga, or learn forest survival skills and how to make tree houses.

It's run by friendly, well-travelled, ecofriendly folk and you can get here by bus or train in less than two hours from Tokyo (see the website for details).
