Working and volunteering

Always ask demanding questions of volunteer programs – many are short-term projects designed to suit the needs of volunteers rather than beneficiaries.

The following local environmental organizations sometimes take foreign volunteers:

Environmental Foundation of Jamaica

Jamaica Environment Trust

Visitors are admitted to Jamaica on the condition that they ‘not engage in any form of employment on the island.’ Professionals can obtain work permits if sponsored by a Jamaican company, but casual work is very difficult to obtain. For more information on work permits, visit the Ministry of Labour & Social Security.
