Santa Cruz is a bustling market town and the most important commercial center in southwest Jamaica. Black River may be the capital of St Elizabeth parish, but Santa Cruz is arguably the more important settlement thanks to its economic clout. Back in the day, Santa Cruz was a market center for horses and mules bred locally for the British army. A livestock market is still held on Saturday, and the first Friday of every month a big produce market takes place, which means serious gridlock.
While there’s little here to make you linger, it’s a good place to stop for a bite to eat or to withdraw money. It's a major transportation hub as well. Santa Cruz can also make a convenient base from which to visit YS Falls, Black River, Accompong, Alligator Pond and Treasure Beach.
