The Fight for a Free Winnifred Beach

For years, the Jamaican government and private developers have been trying to develop Winnifred Beach, the last public beach in the area, and for just as long locals have been fighting to keep it free to access for the entire community. In 2016, they finally received a definitive court judgement to keep it in the public sphere. The community plans to develop the beach for all in partnership with the Jamaica Environment Trust, who are funding lifeguards and nature guides, all to be drawn from local villages: a real vision of community tourism.
