Take a day trip to the Cinque Terre and Portovenere to see two of northern Italy’s most scenic stretches of coast. With round-trip transport from Florence and a guide included, the experience offers all you need for a hassle-free day by the sea. Walk and travel by minivan around the UNESCO-listed fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, then cruise by boat Portovenere. Explore the pretty port village and discover churches, ancient ruins, and even a castle before you return to Florence.
Leave Florence in the morning, and travel toward the white marble quarries of the Apuan Alps and the region of Liguria — home to the UNESCO-listed Cinque Terre. Stop at the first of its five fishing villages, Riomaggiore, for a stroll alongside pastel-colored houses and charming squares.
Continue with a walk to Manarola along the romantically named Via dell’Amore, a route that lends itself to picture-perfect views over the coastline. The smallest of the Cinque Terre villages, Manarola sits in the gorge of a high headland among vines, olive groves, and fragrant Mediterranean shrubs.
From Manarola, you’ll head to Vernazza for a traditional seafood lunch (own expense), and then hop on a boat. Watch the rugged shores of the Cinque Terre slip into the distance as you relax on an hour-long cruise to Portovenere.
After a seaside stroll and a look around the local shops, pay a visit to the Gothic Church of San Pietro, which was built on the remains of a Roman temple. Admire the medieval sculptures of the Collegiate of San Lorenzo, and gaze at Castello Doria, a striking monument that overlooks the hamlet.
Your day trip then ends with our journey back to the start point in Florence. Please note: In adverse weather, the boat ride will be replaced with a minivan transfer.
