Meet Italy’s most prestigious wine on our ‘King of the Reds’ tour. Renowned worldwide, Brunello di Montalcino gains its aura from a special kind of alchemy, where centuries of history merge with 100 percent Sangiovese purity in a unique terroir found in this little corner of Tuscany, just south of Siena. Experience this timeless piece of Tuscan culture on our full-day tour of the Montalcino region, where we meet the winemakers at two boutique wineries to learn about the Brunello winemaking process, enjoy two different wine-tasting sessions, explore the historic walled town of Montalcino – once traversed by popes and pilgrims en route to Rome along the Via Francigena – and indulge in a traditional multi-course Tuscan lunch of local specialties in the heart of Tuscany’s top wine-growing region.
Our tour begins with a panoramic drive through a breathtaking landscape of rolling hills hemmed with vineyards and olive groves to Montalcino, a classic fairytale hilltop town set within fortified walls in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Val d'Orcia. At our first boutique winery we descend into the cellar to visit Brunello behind the scenes with a guided tour of the production process, during which you’ll have the chance to sample the wine at different stages of development. This is followed by a Brunello wine-tasting session, where you can compare the experience to the celebrated finished product. Our tour then delves further into the local terroir at our a second boutique winery, with a tasting session of Brunello DOCG and its sister wine, Rosso di Montalcino DOC.During this full-day tour you’ll have the chance to enjoy a sumptuous, multi-course Tuscan lunch of local specialties and organic wine at the winery itself, and wander the ancient streets of picturesque Montalcino, a cultural jewelbox of history, Renaissance art and local gastronomic products.
