Welcome to Moltrasio & Laglio
The lower lakeside road skirts the lake shore out of Cernobbio and past a fabulous row of 19th-century villas (all private property) around Moltrasio. Winston Churchill holidayed in one (Villa Le Rose) just after WWII and another is owned by the Versace fashion dynasty. Gianni Versace, who was murdered in Miami Beach, Florida, in 1997, is buried in the village cemetery. Near Villa Passalacqua, which is sometimes used for events, is the lovely Chiesa di Sant'Agata, which houses some intriguing frescoes (if you get lucky and find it open). A few kilometres north, the villa-lined hamlet of Laglio is home to Ocean's star George Clooney (he lives in Villa Oleandra). In both villages, stop anywhere, clatter down the cobblestone lanes and stairs to the lake, gawp at the villas as best you can and dream about how making it big in Hollywood could transform your life.
