Sardinia is the most isolated island in the Mediterranean, some 200km from the nearest land mass. Car ferries are available at all major ferry crossings. The shortest ferry crossing from the Italian mainland is from Civitavecchia to Olbia on Sardinia's northeast coast, though there are various alternatives.

If you are travelling by bus, train or car to Italy, check whether you require visas for the countries you intend to pass through.
