Salerno in detail

Eating

Head to Via Roma in the lively medieval centre, where you’ll find everything from traditional, family-run trattorias and gelato vendors to jazzy wine bars, pubs and commendable restaurants. In summer, the wide seafront promenade is a popular place for the pre-dinner passeggiata (evening stroll).

Sweet Treat

Look for torta ricotta e pera (ricotta and pear tart), a speciality in Salerno and sold throughout the Cilento region. Just about every pasticceria (pastry shop) sells this delicious sweet and fruity delicacy – although it's the locals’ favourite as well, so it tends to sell out fast.
