The Medical school of Salerno is considered the oldest medical school.  It was founded in the 9th century in Salerno and it was the most important source of medical knowledge in Western Europe  at that time, it soon became the first European medical institution in the Middle Ages. The most famous work of the Salernitan School was the Regimen Sanitatis Saleritanum. At the beginning the master's knowledge was based on the theory of the humours but then it was gradually enriched by the Arabic and Jewish experience in the medical field. The important contribution to the School of Salerno made by women as female practitioners is outlined, and among them, Trotula de Ruggiero was the most renowned. Today in Salerno you can't find a specific building considered the place where all the activities of the School were held or where the students studied. We have instead a number of buildings that, during the centuries, have been connected with the activities of the School like for example growing plants, to cure and host sick people or simply to give the degree to the new doctors. These places are all located in the historical centre of Salerno not far one from the others. Walk along these places and discover the amazing stories of the school and its doctors. Jump in the medieval and alchemical Salerno. The tour will start from the Museum of the Medical school, then see and learn about San Pietro a Corte, where the doctors received their degree, San Lazzaro chapel and walk to the Minerva’s gardens, a paradise in the center of the city with an amazing view on the coast.
