"Best of the Colosseum: Arena Floor & Gladiator Gate" is the catch-all Colosseum tour in 90 minutes for busy tourists! Walk in the footsteps of emperors, slaves, gladiators and perhaps even the Gods which ruled Rome and the Roman Empire in antiquity.
We meet on the steps beside Trajan's mighty column, recalling his victory in the Dacian Wars. It's stood in the same spot since AD 113 and is the perfect place to set out towards the Colosseum. Indeed, Trajan's Column merits a tour in itself, so many stories wrap around it's pictorial spiral bas-relief. With so much to see in so little time, we walk straight into the soul of ancient Rome and wander through the most important temples, shrines and basilicas which make the Roman Forum such an amazing place. Every building, still standing or ruined in part connects over 2,500 years of history which our local expert archaeologist will bring to life for you!
Next destination, Colosseum, the Icon of Rome. Your guide will explain every aspect of the the Flavian amphitheatre in great detail. Soon thereafter you will enter the arena through Gladiator's Gate. This is an arched side-entrance used by none other than the gladiators in antiquity. Today, aside from being a thrilling way to enter the Colosseum, it is also away from the chaos of the main entrance, which is always crowded with large groups of tourists. Once past the Gladiator's Gate we approach the arena floor, where gladiators killed and survived, or died for the pleasure of others. This brutal place in history is now the perfect spot to glance all around at the sheer scale and beauty of the Colosseum. It must have been terrifying in AD 80, but this is something we can reflect on rather than worry about!
Your guide will deliver a brief history of the arena floor and Colosseum interior before leaving you inside to wander at your leisure. There is no waiting and no worry on this 90 minutes fast-track tour of restricted access areas inside the Colosseum. It includes priority Colosseum ticket entry and tour inside plus easy access into the Roman Forum with an expert local archaeologist guide.
