Pompeii in detail

Flights & getting there

To reach the scavi (ruins) by Circumvesuviana train (€2.80 from Naples, 36 minutes; €2.40 from Sorrento, 30 minutes), alight at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri station, located beside the main entrance at Porta Marina. Regional trains (www.trenitalia.com) stop at Pompei station in the centre of the modern town.

From mid-March to mid-October, tourist train Campania Express runs four times daily between Naples (Porta Nolana and Piazza Garibaldi Circumvesuviana stations) and Sorrento, stopping at Ercolano–Scavi, Torre Annunziata (Oplontis), Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, Castellammare and Vico Equense en route. One-day return tickets from Naples to Pompeii (€11, 29 minutes) or from Sorrento to Pompeii (€7, 24 minutes) can be purchased at the stations or online at EAV.

If driving from Naples, head southeast on the A3, using the Pompei exit and following the signs to Pompei Scavi. Car parks are clearly marked and vigorously touted. Close to the ruins, Camping Spartacus offers good-value, all-day parking (€5). This is a much cheaper option than the main car park located directly north of the Circumvesuviana train station.

From Sorrento, head north along the SS145, which connects to the A3 and Pompeii.
