Palestra Grande

Pompeii

Lithe ancients kept fit at the Palestra Grande, an athletics field with an impressive portico dating from the Augustan period. Used both as a training ground for gladiators and as a meeting centre for youth associations, its huge, portico-flanked courtyard includes the remains of a swimming pool.

The site is now used to host temporary exhibitions.
