AST runs daily buses from Catania to Rifugio Sapienza (one way/return €3.40/6.50, two hours). Buses leave from the car park opposite Catania's train station at 8.15am, travelling via Nicolosi. The bus back to Catania departs Rifugio Sapienza at 4.30pm, arriving in Catania at 6.30pm.
Car & Motorcycle
Nicolosi is about 17km northwest of Catania on the SP10. From Nicolosi it's a further 18km up to Rifugio Sapienza. For Linguaglossa, take the A18 autostrada from Catania, exit at Fiumefreddo and follow the SS120 towards Randazzo.
Slow train Ferrovia Circumetnea follows a 114km trail around the base of the volcano from Catania to Riposto. Affording great views, the local service stops off at a number of small towns on the way, including Bronte and Randazzo. From Catania it takes two hours to reach Randazzo (one way/return €5.20/8.20) in the mountain's northern reaches. Note that most trains terminate in Randazzo, with a waiting time of around 40 to 80 minutes for those wanting to continue to Riposto by train.
