At the weekend, a special service leaves from outside Palazzo Ducale to the Gonzaga's smaller country fiefdom of Sabbioneta (€8 return, one hour, 3pm Saturday, 9am and 1.15pm Sunday).
An express service also operates from Piazza Sordello and Piazza don Leoni for Verona airport (adult/child €5/free, 45 minutes, four daily).
Mantua is just west of the A22 Modena–Verona–Trento autostrada; the best exit is Mantua North. The city is 45km south of Verona and around 50km south of Lake Garda.
Much of old Mantua is a traffic-restricted zone. There is free parking along the city's northern lake road (Viale Mincio) and to the south of the city along Viale Isonzo, near Palazzo Te.
Direct trains link Mantua with Verona (€3.95, 50 minutes, hourly) and Milan (€11.50, two hours, every two hours). The trip to Lake Garda's Peschiera del Garda train station (€6.25, 70 minutes, hourly) involves a change in Verona.
