Located at 1576m, Venini is one of Como's most spectacularly located mountain huts. The simple guesthouse has basic rooms, which take nothing away from the sweeping panorama at your doorstep. The restaurant is a major draw for its outdoor cliffside tables and nicely prepared mountain meals (meals around €20) – polenta with braised beef, pizzocheri (buckwheat pasta ribbons) and the like.
There's great hiking here, including easy walks up Monte di Tremezzo (1700m) just 1km from Rifugio Venini. To get here, make the white-knuckle drive along narrow mountain roads from Argegno (25km, about one hour) – though very fit mountain bikers also make the ascent.
