The Alta (Upper) Maremma starts south of Livorno and continues down to Grosseto, incorporating Massa Marittima and the surrounding Colline Metallifere (metal-producing hills). The ancient mining history and unique landscape of these hills have been acknowledged by inclusion in Unesco's European Geopark Network, and the surrounding area is rich in Etruscan history, too. Inland territory includes the hill towns south of the Crete Senesi and the mountainous terrain surrounding Monte Amiata, all of which make excellent stops for those travelling between South and Central Tuscany.
