This full day tour includes a visit to the ruins of the Ancient city of Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata – also known as the Oplontis archaeological site. The tour will be led by a fully licensed archaeology expert guide, that will explain and show you in details the greatness of the Ancient Roman life.
The 79AD eruption of the Mt. Vesuvius partly destroyed the ancient city of Herculaneum, buried under tons of ashes and lava layers. After the excavations that have partially brought back to light the city, you can actually walk into the streets on the original pavement, enter the shops and the houses, visit the unique Baths – famous all around the world for the richness of their frescoes and mosaics - following your path up to the forum, the square where all the aspects of the Roman life used to melt and intertwine. You will see the old city come to life under your own eyes.
After this incredible 2 hours tour, your guide will bring you to the Oplonti site, in Torre Annunziata. This archaeological area - set between Pompeii and Herculaneum - is considered to be a Pompeii suburbia, where the aristocracy and the powerful people had their otii villae erected, far away from the traffic and the noise of the busy city life. In Oplonti you will visit the amazing Villa di Poppea, the summer residence named after the famous emperor Nero’s wife. The house was uninhabited at the time of the eruption, probably due to some maintenance works started after the strong 62AD earthquake. You will then be guided into the villa, and shown the uniqueness of the frescoes, the mosaics and the remarkable marble sculptures found into the gardens that surround the whole building. This walk will take you more or less 1 hours.
