Join us for a once in a lifetime chance to visit the Pope’s Summer Residence after hours, when it is open exclusively to our group. Embarking from Rome on a private, air-conditioned coach, you will be enchanted as the city streets give way to lush countryside. Find out for yourself why Pope’s have used this as a getaway for hundreds of years as your official Vatican guide leads you through the Apostolic Palace, Private Papal Apartments, and Barberini Gardens.
Your tour will begin with private transport directly from Rome to the idyllic lakeside town of Castel Gandolfo. Once you arrive at the Papal Palace, you will be greeted by an Official Vatican tour guide. Beginning with a tour of the Pope’s private apartments, you will have a chance to view the Pontiff’s private bedroom, study, chapel and receive privileged access to the Papal Terrace, overlooking beautiful Lake Albano. Continue your tour through the estate’s gorgeous lawns. From the ruins of an imperial theatre, to the Path of Roses, the Barberini Gardens are a feast for the senses. You will also view the stunning Magnolia and Belvedere Gardens, culminating in more spectacular views of the volcanic crater lake below. All the while, you will be given the rich history of the Palace, from when it was chosen by Urban VIII in 1626 until it was opened to the public almost 400 years later. Used as a retreat for the Pope, a refuge for Jews in WWII, and most recently, as a museum, there is plenty to learn about this unique structure!
