The Negev Highlands (Ramat HaNegev), which cover some 20% of Israel, encompass dramatic desert landscapes, remote kibbutzim, boutique vineyards and several important Nabataean sites. The nearby hip town of Mitzpe Ramon, high enough to get the occasional snowfall, is on the rim of Makhtesh Ramon.

Rte 10, which runs along the Egyptian border, is closed to civilian traffic for security reasons, but may open up during Passover, Sukkot and Hanukah.
