Heading north and east from Allihies, the wild coastal road (R575), lined with fuchsias and rhododendrons, twists and turns for about 12km to Eyeries. This cluster of brightly coloured houses overlooking Coulagh Bay is often used as a film set. The village is also home to Milleens Cheese, from pioneering producer Veronica Steele. She welcomes visitors to her farm; phone ahead.

From Eyeries, forsake the R571 for even smaller coastal roads to the north and east, with sublime views of the Ring of Kerry to the north, rejoining the R571 at the crossroads of Ardgroom (Ard Dhór). From here, a minor road leads inland to dramatic Glenbeg Lough; ask at the village pub in Ardgroom for information on trout fishing here.

The village of Lauragh (Laith Reach) – barely more than a junction at the northern end of the Healy Pass road – and the whole northeastern corner of the peninsula lie in County Kerry.
