Abbey Theatre

Theatre in North of the Liffey

Our Review

Ireland’s national theatre was founded by WB Yeats in 1904 and was a central player in the development of a consciously native cultural identity. In 2017 it appointed Neil Murray and Graham McLaren of the National Theatre of Scotland as its new directors, and they have promised an exciting new program that will fuse traditional and contemporary fare.

The Abbey's contemporary relevance is a popular subject of debate in the Irish cultural scene, but for visitors it offers the best chance of seeing classic Irish plays (as well as the work of new dramatists) in an established theatrical context.
