Clare Island has the windswept ruins of the Cistercian Clare Island Abbey (c 1460) and Granuaile's Castle, both associated with the pirate queen Grace O'Malley. The island is also a great place to retreat and withdraw from the world and reflect upon the beauty of Ireland. Among the many stirring hikes, there's a self-guided archaeological walk or you can climb Knockmore, a 462m hill. Spectacular views enthral visitors.
