If travelling between Kashan and Esfahan it's worth considering a brief detour in Natanz, on the lower slopes of Mt Karkas. This tree-lined town has two attractions – an aged mosque and a beautiful shrine. The town is also associated with pottery making and tile production. A workshop near the mosque offers hand-thrown pots and tiles for sale.
The greater area of Natanz has a further claim to fame as the country’s major underground uranium enrichment plant. Visitors to the town must not under any circumstances take photographs of this site, or even the fence around the site, en route into town.
