There are so few settlements and villages in Dasht-e Kavir that the existence of the bustling town of Khur (also spelt Khor) comes as some surprise. While there's not much to see in this desert outpost itself, the town forms the main transport hub of the region. It also offers excellent accommodation in a grand, traditional-style hotel for those en route to a desert guesthouse.
Nearby, along the road from Khur to Tabas, there is a huge salt lake used for the harvesting of phosphates. The vast pockmarked disc spreads out across the desert and makes an interesting photo opportunity early and late in the day when the shadows are at their longest.
