Chelgerd is the home of skiing in this part of the Zagros range and makes a good base for climbing some of the many surrounding peaks that rise to nearly 4000m. There are also some unique attractions in and around this tiny village, including seasonal visits to local nomadic communities.
The remarkable old flat-top village of Sar Aqa Seyyed, 25km along a dirt track from Chelgerd, is a popular local destination. Layered down the hillside, the roof of each house forms a walking platform for the house above. During some winter months, the village is cut off from the lower valleys by snow. Ambivalent about visitors, the village is best approached with a guide.
