Dangers & Annoyances
There have been accidents involving boats between Bali and the surrounding islands. These services are unregulated and there is no safety authority should trouble arise. Take precautions.
The two ATMs are occasionally out of order or cash. Bring plenty of rupiah just in case.
Penida Tours is an excellent contact for island-wide info.
Various environmental and aid groups are active on Nusa Penida, with volunteers needed for a variety of projects. They normally collect a fee (US$10 to US$20 per day, depending on the length of your stay) that includes accommodation and contributes to the cause. The following organisations have programs you can join.
Friends of the National Parks Foundation This group has a centre near Ped on the island's north coast. Volunteer work includes aid in the conservation of the critically endangered native Bali starling and teaching in local schools. Accommodation is in simple but comfortable rooms with fans and cold water.
Green Lion Bali Has an award-winning program to breed and protect turtles along Penida's north shore. Volunteers sign on for at least two weeks and work in the turtle compound as well as teaching in local schools. There is a nearby guesthouse.
