To & From the Airport

The cheapest way to get from the airport to the city is with the frequent Damri shuttle buses departing from in front of the terminal. There are buses to central Medan (20,000Rp), Amplas (15,000Rp) and Binjai (40,000Rp). To the airport, the Damri shuttle departs from the Carrefour at Medan Fair Plaza (20,000Rp) every 15 minutes.

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach central Medan from the airport is by air-conditioned Railink train (100,000Rp, 45 minutes, 4.40am to 11.40pm). From Medan city centre, trains run between 3.30am and 9.10pm. Trains depart roughly every hour.

Taxis from the airport charge a basic fare of 10,000Rp, with an additional 3500Rp per kilometre. A journey to the city centre will cost around 200,000Rp and take an hour depending on traffic.

To the airport with Grab expect to pay around 100,000Rp from the city centre for a taxi, though only drop-offs are allowed.

Paradep Shuttle has airport buses to Sianta (one way 55,000Rp).

Bus

There are two major bus terminals in Medan. Purchase tickets from ticket offices outside the terminals.

The Amplas Bus Terminal, which serves Parapat (for Danau Toba) and other southern destinations, is 6.5km south of the city centre. Almost any angkot heading south on Jl SM Raja will get you to Amplas (5000Rp); Grab or Go-Jek taxis are better options, however.

The Pinang Baris Bus Terminal, 10km west of the city centre, serves Bukit Lawang, Berastagi and Banda Aceh. However, to avoid aggresive touts at Pinang Baris, travellers are now taking the buses leaving 900m further north at the stop outside Mawar Bakery in Kampung Lalang – so ask to be dropped off there.

Minivans to Singkil and Kutacane (for Ketambe) leave from Padang Bulan Terminal south of the city centre.

Most lodgings and numerous travel agencies along Jl Katamso can arrange a space for you on a shared door-to-door taxi to popular destinations such as Bukit Lawang (from 120,000Rp), Berastagi (from 120,000Rp), Danau Toba (90,000Rp) and Kutacane (130,000Rp); it’s pricier than a bus but faster and slightly more comfortable.

Train

Although there's a large train station in the city centre, rail services are very limited. The only one that’s useful to travellers is the airport train.
