Air

Sultan Hasanuddin Airport is 22km northwest of Makassar city centre. At peak times, using the toll road can slash travel times in half.

Makassar is well connected with other cities in Sulawesi as well as the rest of Indonesia, including Java, Bali Kalimantan and Maluku. International flights include Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur (four weekly) and Silk Air to Singapore (three weekly).

Note that many airline websites still use Makassar's former name, Ujung Pandang, for bookings.

To & From the Airport

Bus

Airport buses with Damri run every hour between 7am and 5pm daily from the basement level of the airport to Jl Ahmad Yani in central Makassar, passing by Daya bus terminal.

Taxi

Prepaid taxis are available in the arrivals area of the airport and cost from 110,000Rp to 150,000Rp not including the toll road (10,000Rp).

Boat

Much of the Pelni ferry fleet stops in Makassar ready to whisk you (slowly) to just about anywhere in the country. Direct stops include Pare Pare and Bau Bau on Sulawesi, Surabaya on Java, and Labuan Bajo on Flores. Further destinations include Gorontalo and Bitung (Sulawesi), Tarakan and Balikpapan (East Kalimantan), Benoa (Bali), Teluk Priok (Jakarta, Java), Ambon (Maluku) and Sorong (Papua).

Pelni tickets are available at the main office near Hotel Novotel, and agencies near the chaotic ferry port, Pelabuhan Makassar, in the city centre.

Boats to Samalona and Kayangan can be found across from Fort Rotterdam as well as Dermaga Kayu Bangkoa off Jl Penghibur.

Bus & Kijang

Makassar has numerous terminals for getting out of town, but the following three are most useful; you can reach them on separate pete-pete routes which converge at Makassar Mall.

  • Terminal Daya Long-haul buses and Kijangs depart to all points north including Rantepao. Catch any pete-pete (5000Rp, 30 minutes) marked ‘Daya’ from Makassar Mall to the eastern suburbs.
  • Terminal Mallengkeri Mostly Kijangs and a few buses head southeast of Makassar including to Pantai Bira. Take a red pete-pete marked ‘S Minasa’ from Makassar Mall or from along Jl Jendral Sudirman.
  • Terminal Sungguminasa It's easier to catch the regular pete-pete for Malino along Jl Malino near the terminal; to get here take a pete-pete marked ‘S Minasa’ from Makassar Mall or from along Jl Jendral Sudirman.

The bus to Selayar can also drop you in Bulukumba or Pantai Bira, but most travellers opt for the cars that leave more frequently.
