Welcome to Luwuk
Set around a mountainous natural harbour, Luwuk is the biggest town on Sulawesi’s remote eastern peninsula. Long isolated from the rest of the action, Luwuk now sees a trickle of travellers, thanks to improved air links. It's a possible stepping stone to the Togean Islands, and the jumping off point to the forgotten Banggai Islands.
There's decent diving to be had a few hours' drive to the east of Luwuk at the end of the peninsula. To the west, protected areas house healthy (for now) populations of maleo birds.
