Treatment of minor injuries and common traveller’s health problems is easily accessed through regional clinics, many of which cater to foreigners. For serious conditions, you will probably want to leave the island.

Before You Go

Recommended Vaccinations

Specialised travel-medicine clinics are your best source of information; they stock all available vaccines and will be able to give specific recommendations for you and your trip.

Your doctor may also recommend the following:

  • Tetanus Single booster
  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid

Health Insurance

Unless you are definitely sure that your health coverage at home will cover you in Lombok, you should take out travel insurance; bring a copy of the policy as evidence that you're covered. It's a good idea to get a policy that pays for medical evacuation if necessary (which can cost US$100,000).

Some policies specifically exclude 'dangerous activities', which can include scuba diving, renting a local motorbike and even trekking. Be aware that a locally acquired motorbike licence isn't valid under some policies.

Worldwide travel insurance is available at www.lonelyplanet.com/bookings. You can buy, extend and claim online anytime – even if you're already on the road.

Availability & Cost of Healthcare

Rumah Sakit Harapan Keluarga is the best private hospital on Lombok and the only place with a recompression chamber. It's just east of central Mataram and has English-speaking doctors.

The tourist-oriented Blue Island Medical Clinic has outposts in Lombok's main resort areas, including Kuta and Gili Trawangan.

Tap Water

Tap water in Lombok is not safe to drink and is often highly salinated. Those put off by the idea of repeatedly purchasing plastic bottles should utilise the website Refill My Bottle (www.refillmybottle.com), which directs you to hotels and restaurants across Lombok where you can refill your water bottle for free or for a negligible fee.
