Kuta & Legian in detail

Kuta has a vast concentration of cheap, tawdry shops (top-selling souvenirs include penis-shaped bottle openers), and flashy surf-gear emporiums. As you head north along Jl Legian, the quality improves and you start finding cute boutiques, especially near Jl Arjuna (which has wholesale fabric, clothing and craft stores, giving it a bazaar feel). Continue into Seminyak for absolutely fabulous shopping.

Kuta's Favourite Store

The mobs out the front look like they're making a run on a bank. Inside it's simply pandemonium. Welcome to Joger, a Bali retail legend that is the most popular store in the south. No visitor from elsewhere in Indonesia would think of leaving the island without a doe-eyed plastic puppy (4000Rp) or one of the thousands of T-shirts bearing a wry, funny or simply inexplicable phrase (almost all are limited edition). Warning: conditions inside the cramped store are simply insane.

Beachwear & Surf Shops

A huge range of surf shops sell big-name surf gear – including Mambo, Rip Curl, Billabong and Quiksilver. Local names include Surfer Girl and Drifter. Most have numerous locations in south Bali.

You'll also find local surf shops with some renowned board-shapers ready to make you a custom ride.

Large malls are making inroads. Tuban has the Discovery Mall and the flashy Lippo Mall. The Beachwalk complex is a bouquet of gloss on Jl Pantai Kuta.
