Independence Day Carnival

Top choice carnival in Karimunjawa Islands

Every year, costumed islanders from across Palau Karimunjawa congregate in the main town to celebrate Independence Day. Tiny tots dress up in police uniforms, beauty queens grace Ramayana-style chariots and young men cross-dress as women in this pageant of colour and dance. The parade makes a couple of laps of the tiny town centre, before assembling for prize-giving in the alun-alun.

While tourists are welcome, this is primarily (and refreshingly) an event for locals.
