Utterey is West Slkkim's 'other' trekking base. Best known as the starting/finishing point of a two-week Singalila Trek via Dzongri to/from Yuksom, it's also the trailhead for the spectacular two- or three-day hike up to Phokteydara Viewpoint (3600m), which offers panoramas across not just Khanchengdzonga but also into Nepal and as far as Mt Everest.
Unlike Yuksom, Utterey isn't really a place where you can just show up. A matrix of sanctuaries, national park regulations and border proximity means that your agent will need to sort out a fair bit of paperwork – and while sleepy little Utterey is pleasant enough, it's not necessarily somewhere you'll want to wait around for a few days.
Singshore Suspension Bridge, 6km from Utterey, is popular day-trip destination, with bungee jumping planned as a future offering.
