Getting There & Away
Unakoti is 1km north of the road between Kailasahar and Dharmanagar, 9km east of Kailasahar and 19km west of Dharmanagar. The easy way to get there is to hire a taxi from Agartala or Silchar in southern Assam, each about 4½ hours away (₹4000/4500 one-way/return from either place). But there are public transport options too. Buses depart Agartala's Interstate Bus Terminus for Kailasahar (₹120, 4½ hours) at 9.30am and noon, and for Dharmanagar (₹140, five hours) at 8am and 1pm. Shared taxis, shared autorickshaws, Sumo jeeps and buses ply the road between these two towns (₹20 by any vehicle from Kailasahar to the signposted Unakoti turn-off, or ₹100 in a chartered autorickshaw). The road is lightly trafficked and it's quite an enjoyable walk from Kailasahar (about 2½ hours) if you start early enough.
Three daily trains run from Agartala to Kumarghat (seat/sleeper/3AC ₹25/100/500, 2½ hours, 6.15am, 10.45am and 5.45pm), which is 24km south of Kailasahar and connected to it by buses and other local transport. The same trains continue from Kumarghat to Dharmanagar, and the second one (departing Kumarghat at 1.10pm and Dharmanagar at 2.25pm) goes on to Silchar. Coming from Silchar, train 55664 departs at 8am, taking five hours to Dharmanagar and six hours to Kumarghat.
Network Travels runs a bus from Guwahati to Kailasahar (₹580, 18 hours, departure 3.30pm). For the return journey, the bus departs from Seema Travels, 300m east of Kailasahar's central traffic lights, at 12.30pm.
