Take the Low Road

Take your moped, Enfield Bullet or hired taxi and hit the open road – avoiding cows, pedestrians, careening trucks, chickens, dogs, bicycles, pigs, water buffalo and the other assorted obstacles that make Goan roads something of a thrilling ride.

  • Palolem to the Sal River This beautiful stretch of coastal road winds from Palolem via Agonda Beach then through thick forested hills before dropping down to the Sal River. Along the way, detour to pretty Cola Beach and Cabo da Rama fort.
  • Chandor–Quepem–Loutolim circuit Delve deep into the world of Goan Portuguese mansions with this back-road circuit from Margao; detour to the petroglyphs of Usgalimal and the Buddhist caves at Rivona.
  • Colva to Velsao Head north from busy beachfront Colva, up the scenic coast road past dozens of crumbling Portuguese palaces. Stop off here and there to discover deserted stretches of beach, and climb up to Velsao’s Three Kings chapel for the view back down.
  • Palolem to Netravali Head inland through farmland and protected forest to a spice farm, waterfalls and the mysterious Bubble Lake around Netravali.
