Entry & Exit Formalities

Registering on Arrival in Manipur

On arrival at Imphal airport, all foreigners must register at the Foreigners Check Post in the arrivals hall. If travelling by land from Kohima (Nagaland) or Silchar (Assam), foreigners must register at police posts at the state borders at Mao or Jiribam respectively. Foreigners are supposed to register again with the police in Imphal, but in practice your hotel almost always takes care of these formalities.

Security in Manipur

In recent decades Manipur acquired a dire reputation for political unrest and violence, with Meitei, Naga and Kuki separatist groups all in conflict with Indian security forces (and often with each other), while debilitating strikes, road blockades, riots and curfews became all too common features of Manipuri life. Not many years ago, foreign travellers were restricted for security reasons to the Imphal area only. The situation is much calmer now, especially since the advent of a new BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led state government in 2017, and as of early 2019 there were no travel restrictions. Occasional strikes, unrest and violent incidents do still occur, however, so it pays to stay abreast of the situation before travelling. Regional news media and websites such as the Centre for Development & Peace Studies (www.cdpsindia.org) and Global Security (www.globalsecurity.org) are helpful.
