Entry & Exit Formalities
To travel between Sumdo in Spiti and Rekong Peo in Kinnaur, foreigners need an inner line permit. These are obtained easily in Rekong Peo (₹400) and Kaza (free), or somewhat less rapidly in Shimla (₹500 to ₹600). Note that a few Asian nationalities, including Chinese and Taiwanese, cannot get inner line permits but must apply for a special permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi.
Spiti is essentially an internet dark zone. The one hope of getting a connection is in Kaza, where some hotels offer just enough bandwidth to message on WhatsApp but rarely enough for email or anything more data-heavy. However, reports suggest that Kaza and Tabo might receive new infrastructure in 2019–2020.
Only BSNL has mobile phone coverage, and with minimal internet connectivity. Reliance has been reported to be considering introducing a second network.
