Ganga Sagar Mela

Religious in The Ganges Delta

Held annually at Sagar Island, where the Ganges River meets the sea, the Ganga Sagar Mela sees hundreds of thousands of Hindu pilgrims, chillum-smoking sadhus and tourists converge on the last day of Poush (a month in the Hindu calendar) and bathe en masse in the estuarine waters to cleanse their bodies and souls.

Believers also make a beeline to pay their respects at the Kapil Muni Temple, consecrated to a sage in Hindu legend known for his incendiary powers.
