Welcome to Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary
The 347-sq-km Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, 40km west of Sambalpur in northeastern Odisha, is a lovely (though rarely taken) day excursion from the city. Debrigarh's dry deciduous forest stretches from the Barapahad Hills down to the shores of the vast Hirakud Reservoir, and is home to deer, antelopes, sloth bears, langur monkeys, a few tigers and leopards, as well as 234 species of birds. The final 10km stretch of the journey from Sambalpur features a beautiful drive along the embankment of the Hirakud reservoir. Past the sanctuary gates, access to the jungle usually requires a 4WD, which can be arranged through your hotel in Sambalpur for ₹1300 to ₹1500 plus mileage charges.
