Darjeeling sprawls over a west-facing slope in a confusing web of interconnecting roads and steep steps. Expect an uphill hike to your hotel if arriving at the train station or jeep stand. The two main squares – broad, traffic-free Chowrasta, near the top of town, and busy, clogged Clubside junction – are linked by pedestrianised Nehru Rd, which doubles as the main shopping street. The Mall is officially a mainly traffic-free loop road running north from Chowrasta and back to it, but the Mall name is often applied to Chowrasta and Nehru Rd as well. Hill Cart Rd runs the length of the bustling lower bazaar and is Darjeeling’s perpetually clogged major vehicle thoroughfare.
